The eight subjects that keep coming back, and the words each one needs.
How this drill works, and why it is built this way›
Band 6 asks for “an adequate range of vocabulary for the task”. Not a big vocabulary — the right one for the topic in front of you.
Task 2 returns to eight subjects: education · environment · technology · health · work · cities · crime · globalisation. Prepare those and you have prepared most of the exam.
Learn each topic as a small set of nouns plus the verbs that go with them, not as a long list of adjectives.
A memorised topic sentence is obvious to an examiner and scores badly. Learn the words, then build your own sentences.
Worked example
Governments are under pressure to reduce carbon ______ from transport.
A emissions · B pollutions · C smokes · D wastes
Answer: A emissions
Emissions is the exact word for gases released into the air, and it pairs with carbon. Pollution is uncountable, so pollutions is not a word. The point: each topic has a few exact nouns. Those are what to learn.

The drill moves you up or down on its own. Two good sets and it gets harder; two hard ones and it steps back.
The band range is what this level practises for — it is a guide, not a score. Only your first answer to each item counts towards the level decision.
