Map & Plan Labelling

Follow a spoken walk-through and put the right letter in the right place. The recording plays at normal speed — what changes between levels is how much the speaker doubles back, and how far the directions sit from the plan in front of you.

How to attack this question type
  • Study the plan before you press Play. Find the entrance, find north, and read every label already printed on it. Those printed labels are your anchors — the speaker will navigate from them.
  • Put your finger on the starting point and move it as the speaker moves. Map questions are lost by losing your place, not by missing vocabulary.
  • The answers come in the order the speaker walks, not in the order the letters sit on the plan. Do not jump ahead to a letter that looks right.
  • Orientation words are the whole game. Opposite is across from. Beyond is further than. The far side of means you go past it. Adjacent to means touching. Learn these before you learn anything else.
  • If the speaker turns round — we come back the way we came, retrace your steps — then left and right swap. This is where most marks go.
  • There are always more letters than answers. A letter you never use is normal, not a mistake. And a place the speaker talks about is not always a place on the plan.

Worked example — let's solve one together

You hear: “From the main gate, follow the path north. The potting shed is on your left, just before the pond.”

The plan shows the gate at the bottom, a pond halfway up, and lettered circles either side of the path. Potting shed → the letter on the LEFT of the path, BELOW the pond

Two words did all the work. On your left fixes the side — and note it is your left as you walk north, which on the plan is the west side. Just before the pond fixes how far. Neither word is difficult; the difficulty is holding both while the speaker keeps talking. That is what this drill trains.

Carry into the mock: find the entrance and north before the audio starts, and move your finger as the speaker moves — when they turn round, your left and right turn round too.
