“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever” – Mahatma Gandhi

Learning is indeed a process that never ends. Moreover, the great institutions of learning are eternal as well. In this article, I will guide you through some of Australia’s finest learning institutions.

Their top 5 universities are in the top 50 of the world, their top 7 are in the world’s top 100 and 15 Australian universities are within the globe’s top 250 universities. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?  That is because it is just as good as it sounds. Imagine studying in a country where the education is top-notch, the rates of employment are high, and the outdoors are fantastic with a whopping 10,685 beaches. This paradise is called Australia! Australian cities such as Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney feature among the top cities for students and also are high on the quality of life index.

The geographical spread of universities
Australia has a total of 43 universities, all very highly regarded. Of the 43, most of them are huddled on the East Coast in the States of Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. Melbourne in Victoria has a total of 8 universities while Adelaide in Southern Australia has a further 6 universities. There are 5 universities in the city of Perth on the western coast of Australia while the University of Hobart is the only one on the island of Tasmania. Australian universities that are far from the metropolitan cities and in sparsely populated areas are actively looking for students and offer substantial scholarships along with work opportunities to eventually settle down there. Some of the most popular courses among Indians in Australia are business, tourism, hospitality management, MBA, accounting, healthcare and IT, to name a few.

Top Australian Universities
Australian universities rank among some of the best in the world and studying there would lead to a wonderful academic experience. Australian National University (ANU) in Melbourne is ranked 24th in the world and continues to push forward with its research department. ANU is followed by the University of Melbourne (ranked 39th) and the University of Sydney (ranked 42nd). Sydney is also home to the University of New South Wales (UNSW) which is ranked 45th in the world. Their graduates are the number one choice for in-demand employers, according to a recent LinkedIn study.  The University of Queensland in Brisbane (ranked 48th) is widely known for several research innovations including the cervical cancer vaccine. The University of Western Australia and Monash University are the final two Australian universities in the top world’s top 100. One of the noteworthy points to mention here is the rise of Australia’s younger institutions. 25% of Australian universities in the top 100 are less than 50 years old which speaks volumes about the importance of education in Australia.

Admission Procedure
Australia is in the southern hemisphere and has a different admission cycle. They have an admission intake in February – March (summer intake) and July – August (winter intake). Application deadlines for the summer term are in December and in May for the winter term. However, I would advise you not to wait until the deadlines and send in your applications well before time. In addition to submitting your application along with the supporting documents such as your Statement of Purpose, Letters of Recommendation and your transcripts, you’ll also have to pay an application fee. One of the most important components of your university application is the IELTS test score which also plays a significant role in your visa application. Most universities require a minimum score of 6 – 6.5 band score in IELTS but aiming for a 7+ band score is a must to secure admission in the best universities.

One of the best perks of studying in Australia is the availability of scholarships from universities and the Australian government. Some of the universities offering scholarships to Indian students are RMIT University, La Trobe University, Federation University, and Deakin College.

In my opinion, Australia is a great choice for pursuing your higher education with its world-class universities, availability of a post-study work permit with a path to permanent residency, and high employment rates.

That’s all from me on universities and the admissions procedure for Australian universities. I hope you found this article useful. I’d be happy to assist you with your doubts and concerns regarding the same. You can share your queries in the comment box below. We’d love to hear from you!
