About the Detailed Learning Style Assessment

What is this assessment?

The “My Learning Strengths Inventory – Detailed Edition” is a self-assessment tool designed to help individuals gain a deeper understanding of their preferred ways of learning. It moves beyond basic learning style models to provide a more nuanced profile of how you take in and process information, as well as the environments and social interactions that best support your learning.

Purpose of the Assessment:

The primary goal of this inventory is to empower you with self-awareness about your unique learning preferences. By identifying your strengths, you can:

  • Develop more effective study habits.
  • Choose learning strategies that align with your natural tendencies.
  • Better understand why certain learning situations are more comfortable or challenging for you.
  • Communicate your learning needs more effectively to educators or collaborators.
  • Become a more adaptable and successful learner.

What Does it Measure?

This detailed assessment explores several key dimensions of learning:

Taking in Information (Input Preferences):

  • Visual: Learning best through seeing (diagrams, written instructions, demonstrations).
  • Auditory: Learning best through hearing (explanations, discussions, sounds).
  • Kinesthetic: Learning best through doing, moving, and hands-on experiences.

Processing Information (Cognitive Preferences):

  • Reflective vs. Active: Whether you prefer to think things through quietly or learn by doing and discussing.
  • Sensing vs. Intuitive: Whether you focus on concrete facts and practical applications or on abstract concepts and new possibilities.
  • Sequential vs. Global: Whether you prefer to learn in a step-by-step, orderly fashion or by grasping the big picture first.

Learning Environment and Social Interaction (Environmental Preferences):

  • Solitary vs. Social: Whether you learn best alone or in the company of others.

How Does it Work?

The inventory consists of a series of statements. For each statement, you will choose the option that best describes your preferences or typical behavior in learning situations. There are no right or wrong answers. Your honest responses are key to generating an accurate profile of your learning strengths.

After completing the questions, we will tally your responses for each category. The scores will indicate your dominant preferences within each dimension.

Benefits of Understanding Your Learning Style:

  • Enhanced Learning Efficiency: Tailor study methods to your strengths.
  • Increased Motivation: Engage with material in ways you find more stimulating.
  • Improved Academic Performance: Apply strategies that lead to better comprehension and retention.
  • Greater Self-Awareness: Understand your cognitive and environmental needs.
  • Better Adaptation: Learn to navigate diverse teaching styles and learning environments.

Using Your Results:

The assessment provides a “Detailed Learning Style Profile.” This profile is not meant to label you, but rather to offer insights. You will likely find you have a combination of preferences. The guide accompanying the assessment offers strategies to:

  • Leverage your identified strengths.
  • Explore and develop less dominant learning approaches.
  • Communicate your needs effectively.
  • Create learning environments conducive to your success.
  • Maintain flexibility in your learning journey.

By investing a little time in understanding how you learn best, you can unlock new levels of academic and personal growth.
