Study Smart: Learning English beyond classroom

A classroom is a place where guided learning happens. Students are typically taught based on a particular syllabus. Teachers introduce grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, writing and speaking activities, helping them gain confidence in their chosen language. But to become accomplished communicators students need to keep learning beyond the four walls of a classroom.

With the advent of technology, there are now a number of opportunities available to help students hone their language skills. Here are five ways to improve your English outside the classroom:

1.Read, read, read

We can safely assume that everybody has a smart phone these days. So instead of using it just for WhatsApp and Facebook why not put it to better use? Applications like Flipboard and Google News Stand are available 24/7 and help you curate news and articles specific to your tastes. You can even read long articles on different subjects on websites like aeon.co or brainpickings.org.

Reading is one of the most effective ways to improve your English. You will widen your vocabulary and improve your grammar as well as keep up to date with the world around you.

2.Watch and listen

Channels like Youtube.com and Ted.com have provided us with a wealth of fun and information in the form of videos. Then there are various podcast stations available in the forms of apps and websites where you can listen to people having real-life conversations. Apps like Podcast addict and Radiolab can be easily installed and listened to whenever you have time. Or simply watch an English movie – you can always turn on the subtitles to aid your understanding.

Listening helps your brain gets used to the sounds of the English language. It is also a great way of improving your vocabulary and will enable you to become a more natural English speaker.

3.Play English language games

There are countless quizzes, grammar challenges, and other very interesting English language games freely available online. They are a fun way to practice and improve your English. Then there are websites like vocabulary.com which will help you build up new vocabulary in a very scientific and fun way.

4.Join an online discussion forum:

What interests you? Riding, travel, photography – you name it and there will be a forum on it. By reading and responding on forums you get a wealth of information about your favorite topics as well as gaining confidence to voice your opinion. It is real and it is interactive and that is what makes forums such a great tool for improving your English skills.

5.Speak your mind

Get hold of a friend who knows English and speak. The best way to learn a language is to use it. It helps your overcome fear and builds up your confidence. So never lose the opportunity. Next time when you are in the market or with someone who knows English – speak up. You might feel a little hesitant at first but let go of your fear and start using English in everyday conversations. You will find most people will be most willing to help and encourage you.
