At Rosemounts, we strongly believe that every child deserves a chance to develop into a content and well-rounded adult, encompassing overall well-being which includes mental, physical and social well- being. As parents, educators, and school leaders, we aim for our children to become self-motivated learners who embrace autonomy, accountability, and informed decision-making. This transformative journey begins with nurturing a healthy mind. Unfortunately, mental health remains significantly neglected in India.
Mental health is crucial at every phase of life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. It encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, influencing how we think, feel, and behave. It also plays a vital role in the management of stress, relationships, and decision-making processes.
India, home to the largest adolescent population, faces substantial challenges, with mental health disorders affecting 6.5% of the general population and a higher 23.3% among school children and adolescents. Regrettably, India records the highest youth suicide rate globally, with suicide being the primary cause of death in this age group. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated mental health issues, impacting individuals of all ages, including children and teenagers, through experiences of grief, fear, social isolation, and increased screen time.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recommends that all secondary and senior secondary schools appoint a counsellor and engage in psychological exercises to enhance students’ self-concept, self-image, and resilience. It also suggests fostering curiosity in students about themselves and the world as a fundamental aspect of the learning process.
Rosemounts Center for Mental Well-Being is dedicated to promoting mental health awareness by integrating its services into the educational framework. By providing comprehensive support for students, parents, and teachers, the Center aims to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health issues and offer practical solutions. Our vision is to cultivate an environment within the educational system where children can flourish emotionally, psychologically, and academically, supporting their holistic well-being and development.
The Center’s Healthy Minds program is thoughtfully curated and delivered by a team of experienced professionals, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and trained counsellors. Dr. (Lt. Col Retd) Kartikeya Singh spearheads the program, bringing his expertise and supervision to enrich it. Additionally, Mr Madhukar Dhiman contributes his vast experience in student counselling, school collaboration, and parent communication to enhance the program’s efficacy.
We all experience challenges with our emotional and mental well-being, especially during our younger years. At the Centre for Mental Well-Being, we recognise the pervasive lack of awareness and stigma surrounding a mental health issues. The crucial initial step is to encourage open discussions about these issues.
We do that by organising workshops with teachers, parents and students.
Implementing school-based mental health identification programs can enhance both academic performance and mental well-being in students.
Through the implementation of effective screening techniques which include administration of various screening tools and structured sessions in collaboration with parents and teachers, we can identify students who require support.
Moreover, by providing training for teachers to recognize early indicators such as school absenteeism, neglect of self-care, declining academic achievements, and deteriorating social interactions, we can potentially intervene at the onset of significant mental health issues in children and adolescents.
Timely intervention plays a crucial role in equipping adolescents to navigate future challenges, both personal and professional. Interventions can generally be categorized as preventive or therapeutic strategies.
Preventive interventions encompass lifestyle adjustments that emphasize dietary improvements, physical activity, talk therapy, and mindfulness exercises that will aid in mental health well-being. On the other hand, therapeutic interventions involve the administration of various diagnostic tools and approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and group therapy that further help in addressing mental health issues.
These interventions include the utilisation of psychometric assessments, periodic age-appropriate workshops, and tailored individual and group sessions.
These workshops aim to stimulate discussions on emotional and mental well-being. Besides facilitating conversations, we provide practical guidance to all participants, empowering them with tools applicable to their daily routines.
