IELTS Reading Exercise 6: Summary Completion

A summary follows the passage’s main sequence but compresses the language. Predict the grammar of each gap and look for a paraphrased idea nearby.

Passage and summary

A coastal town replaced several concrete drainage channels with planted wetlands. During moderate storms, the wetlands slowed water before it reached the harbour. They also created habitat for insects and birds. Engineers cautioned that the wetlands were one part of the flood plan and would not remove the need for maintained drains or emergency preparation.

Complete with no more than two words: The town used planted _____ to slow storm water. The project also supported local _____. Engineers said conventional drains and emergency planning were still _____.

Answers

1. wetlands. 2. habitat. 3. necessary. The final answer is a paraphrase of would not remove the need for, so the summary tests meaning rather than word copying alone.

After checking, read the completed summary as a paragraph. Every answer should fit both the evidence and the grammar around the gap.
