IELTS Academic · Listening Practice Lab™

IELTS Listening practice: follow meaning as the answer changes shape.

Practise following a conversation, predicting the kind of answer you need and recording it accurately. Learn with replay first; test yourself without replay later.

Three Listening sessions are free now at A2, B1 and B2. They run in a separate area, need no student login and save no result to an enrolled-student record.

Selected complimentary practice

Three public sessions for active Listening practice.

The free set uses one fixed recording at each of three levels. Replay supports learning; the complete free mock later removes that support.

01

A2 · Free session

Form and note completion

Complete a form

Listen for names, numbers and practical details in a short everyday conversation while using the form to predict the kind of answer required.

Start the free A2 session
  • Predict names, numbers and places
  • Notice corrected or replaced information
  • Review spelling and answer format
02

B1 · Free session

Form and note completion

Complete notes

Follow the sequence of information and identify the exact words needed in structured notes without losing the next answer.

Start the free B1 session
  • Use labels and grammar to predict
  • Follow meaning rather than one key word
  • Respect the printed word limit
03

B2 · Free session

Map and plan labelling

Label a map

Track the starting position, directions and stable landmarks while the speaker describes a route, building or place.

Start the free B2 session
  • Locate the starting point first
  • Follow direction and position language
  • Recover quickly after one missed answer

From learning support to test conditions

Use replay to learn—then take it away.

Learning practice and mock testing have different purposes. One helps the learner find the precise cause of an error; the other measures whether the skill survives one-play conditions and time pressure.

01

Predict before listening

Read ahead and decide what kind of information and grammar the gap appears to require.

02

Follow meaning and sequence

Expect speakers to correct themselves, replace an earlier detail or move quickly to the next answer.

03

Replay the evidence while learning

Return to the exact moment where attention, language, spelling or answer format broke down.

04

Remove replay in complete mocks

Use one-play, timed Listening sections to test sustained attention and recovery under realistic conditions.

A repeatable Listening method

Before, during and after the recording.

Listening improves when review goes beyond seeing the answer and identifies exactly where the process broke down.

  1. 01

    Predict

Use the form, notes or map to anticipate the answer type and relevant context.

  2. 02

    Follow

Listen for meaning and sequence while expecting corrections and changed information.

  3. 03

    Verify

Review whether the error involved attention, language, spelling, word limit or answer format.

Questions people ask

What to know before you begin.

Can I replay the recording in IELTS Listening practice?

Rosemounts learning sessions may allow replay so you can review the evidence. Complete mock tests should use test-like one-play conditions so the result reflects sustained listening.

Why do I hear the right answer but still lose the mark?

The written answer must follow the instruction. Spelling, word limits, singular or plural form and number format can make an otherwise understood answer incorrect.

How should I handle a missed answer?

Move forward with the recording. Waiting for information that has already passed often causes several more missed answers. Mark the uncertainty and review it after the section.

Are the complimentary sessions complete IELTS Listening tests?

No. They are short, supported learning sessions. Complete mocks use longer test-like sequences and are intended to measure attention, accuracy and recovery under pressure.

How large is the existing Rosemounts Listening bank?

The current Listening Practice Lab contains approximately 60 focused recordings across four CEFR learning levels, with form or note completion and map labelling as its present lab formats.
