Two dates to plan around

Planning an international education is exciting, but the practical questions matter just as much as the dream: Can the course support your career direction? Is the financial plan realistic? What will the post-study period allow you to do?

Two separate developments now shape UK planning for 2027. They relate to different stages of the journey, so students should understand both without confusing one for the other.

• 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC: Chevening Scholarship applications for the 2027–28 academic year close. For applicants in India, this is 4:30 p.m. IST.
• 1 January 2027: Most eligible bachelor's and master's graduates who apply for a Graduate visa on or after this date will receive 18 months instead of two years. Doctoral graduates continue to receive three years.

Chevening Scholarships for 2027–28

Chevening is the UK Government's international scholarship programme for eligible one-year taught master's degrees. It is fully funded, but applicants need to check the detailed terms and eligibility requirements carefully.

One point is especially important for recent graduates: Chevening requires work experience gained after completing the undergraduate degree. This means that a student moving directly from a bachelor's degree into a UK master's will usually not meet the current requirements. Checking eligibility early can prevent unnecessary work and disappointment.

• Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
• Commit to returning to the home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends.
• Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience gained after completing the undergraduate degree.
• Have completed undergraduate studies at least two years before the application deadline.
• Apply to three different eligible UK university courses.
• Submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by 8 July 2027 at 17:00 BST.

The Graduate visa changes from January 2027

The Graduate visa is different from the Student visa. It allows eligible international graduates to remain in the UK after completing their course, work in most jobs, or look for work.

Under the current published rules, applications made on or before 31 December 2026 normally receive two years, while applications made on or after 1 January 2027 normally receive 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates continue to receive three years.

The deciding factor is the date of the Graduate visa application, not the date the student first applied to university or began the course. A student can apply only after the education provider has told the Home Office that the eligible course has been completed successfully.

The Graduate visa cannot be extended. Some graduates may later be able to switch to another immigration route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, if they meet that route's requirements. For students beginning in 2027, this makes early career preparation more valuable: understanding the target industry, developing relevant skills, building networks and learning how sponsorship works.

What this means for a UK study decision

A university's ranking or a country's reputation should not decide the matter on their own. A sound decision brings several parts of the picture together.

• Course fit: Does the curriculum genuinely support the career direction you are considering?
• Total financial commitment: What will tuition, living costs, travel, visa charges and other expenses mean for your family?
• Funding plan: Do you meet the published Chevening requirements, and what is the plan if you do not receive the scholarship?
• Employability: Which skills, experiences and professional relationships will you need to build during the degree?
• Longer-term plan: If remaining in the UK matters to you, what could a realistic transition to a sponsored role involve?
