Language Learning Skills and Pathways

A language course should develop the skills the learner actually needs. Speaking, listening, reading and writing overlap, but the balance can change with the person’s goal.

The four skills work together

Listening provides models for pronunciation and natural phrasing. Speaking makes retrieval active. Reading expands vocabulary and exposes recurring structures. Writing slows language down so that accuracy can be reviewed.

A learner may need a different balance for everyday conversation, university study, work, travel or an examination.
