The Paradox of Choice

While common logic suggests that having more options leads to greater satisfaction, psychologists argue that an abundance of choice can actually be detrimental to our well-being. When faced with excessive possibilities—whether in a supermarket aisle or a career path—individuals often experience “decision paralysis,” unable to make a selection at all. Furthermore, even after a choice is finally made, the individual is frequently plagued by regret, imagining that a rejected alternative might have been superior. This phenomenon challenges the fundamental economic assumption that maximizing freedom of choice automatically maximizes happiness.
